Meh 2010-05-09 |
| By Brendan M. Kennedy (Minneapolis) |
| I went to the AT&T store to get a new phone and was intrigued by this on display. I was looking to get a phone with a qwerty keyboard and music playback. I should have just bought an iphone for the same price. The keyboard is nice and easy to use and I can plug in my ear buds and jam out to a couple of songs while on break at work. Sadly I have to either buy songs off of the poorly designed internet browser or buy a micro SD card and adapter so I can plug it into my computer and transfer songs that way, blah. The battery life is pretty good, I can go a two to three days without recharging. The messaging is easy to use and setting a contact list makes it easier. My only issue with the messaging is that the icon that says I have a message in the inbox constantly flashes. AT&T couldn't fix it and they tried everything. The menus are nice and easy to navigate and you can choose different navigation layouts, I like the grid layout the best because it keeps the main screen clear of any icons. I think the voice playback of texts is hilarious, it even understood acronyms like lol and read it as "laugh out loud" in it's soulless robot voice. The phone had features I was paying for that I never used. I should have done more research before I bought it. I've had it for over a year and a half now and it seems that the speaker is losing quality. Either voices come thought very soft or are so overpowering that they are jumbled and hard to understand. I wouldn't really recommend this phone to anyone unless they wanted to spend money on more supplies like a headset and memory cards. Re-reading this I realize it a jumble of comments all slapped together to look like a review, that's kind of how the phone is, a handful of nice features surrounded by a bunch of fluff. |
Good For Texting, Everything Else...Meh. 2010-04-23 |

Texting? GREAT
Everything Else? Meh.
The great thing about coming from a regular ten button phone to this QWERTY keyboard is the speed in which you can send messages improves dramatically. I wasn't big on text messaging (money and plans aside) thinking that it was a Rube Goldberg way to contact people. After all, you are holding a phone in your hands. Why not just call them?
Part of that bias was based on the fact that with a ten button phone, typing a message was practically a test of patience. I had no patience when it came to that. Clicking away to make a few simple words was no fun at all. A simple phone call would do for me.
Then my phone died. In comes the Nokia 6790 Surge and boy what a switch-a-roo i made. I'd say that half the time I'm texting rather than calling. You wonder why I don't know much about people these days! Since I don't call them anymore, the only thing I find out about them is the information I need from them. If you want to be disconnected from your family and friends, just text a little.
This phone facilitates that task. The keyboard is nice and it feels like it can withstand a few beatings, and after a few days, your hands will be using that keyboard pretty nimbly. On that feature alone, most looking for a solid texting phone can be happy about this item. You can stop reading and get the phone. Solid 5 Stars!
Everyone else looking for the complete package will be disappointed. I found the phone to be a one trick pony. It does it well, but everything else is lacking.
Here's why:
Lets look at its aesthetics. For more adult hands, the phone has an awkward scale. It's a little too fat to be completely comfortable in adult hands, and it's not long enough that your fingers can grip it nicely. It just feels an inch too short and an inch too wide. The only time the phone feels comfortable is when its used to text. In that ergonomics configuration it feels right. Otherwise, adult hands will fumble with it.
The brains of the phone is just a little too slow for what it wants to handle. The orientation of the menu changes with the orientation of the phone. It's a great little feature, but it's a shame that the transition isn't a smooth one. It hic-ups at times and you have to wait for the menu to appear. It's annoying because sometimes you need to readjust the phone to catch up to your previous actions. Not the workhorse you'd like it to be.
The menu system could use some tweaking as well. It wants to resemble an iPhone in some instances by using the grid menu system. The problem with this is that there are a lot of menus, yet the speed at which the phone tackles these is so lethargic that you'll probably neglect the capabilities of the phone because of the slowness that you'll have to endure.
If you do want to use your phone as some sort of business assistant, you may be satisfied in this field, but it wont overtake some other true smartphone counterparts. It can handle e-mail, and a few lite office oriented file tasking, but again, I'm not talking about a Blackberry here. If you want something that works like a Blackberry then you'll have to get a Blackberry. If you need something that you might potentially use one day, then this phone can help you out.
Overall, I can't say this is a terrible phone. This phone is more for the person that wants a solid texting phone. A messaging phone that can handle some lite office tasks on the go, yes I can say this could do you justice. A phone that some serious business oriented person might use? I think not.
The biggest draw to this phone is its QWERTY keyboard and the ability to send messages with comfort and speed. Hands down this is the best feature. Everything else is just a middle of the road sort of feature. It wont win the business crowd and it won't wow anyone that has a Blackberry or iPhone. In those parts, this phone is just meh.
It just comes down to your main usage, but for us old folk with big hands and a lot of things happening at once, this isn't for you.
Texting: Great
Everything Else: Meh. |
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE 2010-03-01 |

| I have had two of these since Nov. They have both had the same issue come up. The screen literally just dies!! So finally after the 2nd one going bad 2 days after they sent it to us, Nokia actually sent a new battery. Still no screen. So finally I was given the option of a different phone or this one again. I am trying one last time for this phone so we shall see. |
Not feeling the Urge to keep the Surge 2009-11-04 |
| By T. Boone (Dallas, TX USA) |
| This phone should not bear the name Nokia. First off, sliding it open to dial numbers is not efficient and when open - it is clumsy and awkward. Phone features and apps are ordinary, the screen size is too small and has very low resolution. The volume controls and the camera button are too close. Last but not least, the charger input is hidden behind a panel - why? The only nice thing I can say about the Surge is the smooth flow of the QWERTY keyboard. If you had to pay full retail for your first Nokia - it will be a huge letdown. I hope this is not the future of Nokia because it gets an D in design. I consider myself Nokia loyal, but I regret this purchase and I will return it (with a restocking fee). Buyers beware of restocking fees - sometimes these fees are as high as the price for the contract phone. It is best to know the product before you place the order. Amazon reviews are most helpful - if you take the time to do this. |
