Wii version not a true multi-player 2010-09-08 |
| By Zack Davisson (Seattle, WA, USA) |
I really hate it when Wii call themselves multi-player on the box, and then you find out that only a small percentage of the game is multi-player with the bulk of the game being single-player only. This happened with Mario Kart Wii. You were forced to play in single-player mode for hours in order to unlock new karts and characters for use in multi-player mode. And here it is again with "Toy Story 3 Wii."
To me, multi-player is key for any Wii game. If I wanted to devote countless lonely hours playing by myself, I would have gotten a powerhouse system like the PS3 or X-Box 360 which offers far more variety in games and better graphics. The Wii is like a board game. I want to be able to have some fun with my wife and friends all playing together. I am willing to sacrifice superior graphics for superior fun.
"Toy Story 3 Wii" offers two gaming modes, "Story Mode" and "Toy Box Mode." Of these two, the "Story Mode" is the most limited, having a series of sequential tasks based loosely on some of the scenes in the film, but often only very loosely. For example, the first Story Mode adventure features Woody and Jessie running along a freight train in order to stop the Evil Dr. Porkchop, and the next one has Woody, Jessie and Buzz in Andy's room trying to get ahold of his cell phone so they can call him to come and play with them again. The "Toy Box Mode," on the other hand, is an open-ended world of toys where you have a sequence of quests that allow you to build your own Toy Town, activate new characters, and basically live in this whole toy world.
Only the "Story Mode" is multi-player.
This is a real disappointment, especially when you consider that both the "Story Mode" and the "Toy Box Mode" are multi-player on the PS3 and X-Box 360 versions of the "toy Story 3" game. The technology exists, they just didn't leverage it for the Wii. Which is ridiculous, as it is in the Wii that multi-player is the most important.
That made the whole game a bust for me. I set down with my wife to play it, and we were having fun clearing the Story Mode levels, then when we got into the Toy Box for the real adventure, the second player could no longer join in. The fun meter on the game dropped to zero in that instant.

MY 8-YEAR-OLD GRANDSON LOVES IT 2010-09-05 |
| By Bob S. (Northeast Massachusetts USA) |
I can't yet tell if this game has staying-power since my grandsons left for a vacation two days after getting it. But I can say that they loved playing this game (the 8-year-old did most of the playing and his 4-year old brother just a little). The action, graphics, and sound are super and they'd just seen the movie so they were delighted with it.
I don't know if it'll wear thin- another reviewer complained about the limited number of quests on the Wii version- but, until then, they're loving it! |
Toy Story 3 freezes on the Wii 2010-09-04 |
| By A. Nieves (Virginia) |
We purchased this game 3 months ago and it freezes up often during the game, to the point where the Wii console needs to be powered off/on.
We have numerous games and none of them ever freeze or have caused a problem like this. Our console is working properly. The CD does not have any physical damage and its clean. The problem occurs when a part of the game is completed and it attempts to go back to the main page. The game tends to freeze as it displays "loading" when it attempts to return to the main page.
It appears to be a fun game but we will never know for sure since it freezes almost daily to the point where my 6 year old finds the game unusable.
I've been checking the blogs and it appears to be a common problem. Don't waste your money on this game. |
Not all games translate to the Wii 2010-09-02 |
| By A.M.Boughey (Rochester, MN) |
As most Wii users will know, the unique gameplay, controller design and interactions that are fun, do not lend themselves readily to may role playing games, and as much fun as TS3 is here, it doesn't compare to the same version of the game on PS3 or XBox.
The graphics are OK, not super impressive, but then again this is a Wii, and with only an available 480p output (and that's if you buy a special lead) so don't expect high def rendering on screen.
The first question I ask about any new game for the Wii is How easy is it to control?
Most of us don't have (or want to buy) the far from cheap "Classic Controller", and usually find the controlling of the game to be either point and twitch simple, or complicated and difficult with a controller / nunchuk combination in both hands.
Unlike the excellent Fifa 2010, this game immediately falls foul of this fact, requiring a lot of dexterity and concentration, which is difficult to find, and even more to maintain in younger children.
The game is fun however, as movie tie ins go, it's pretty playable, even with the standard controller.
Where TS3 does score is in it's interactive play between children or siblings, especially via the split screen mode.
It has both a decent, story-driven game that touches upon some highlights from the film, as well as an inventive open world game called Toy Box mode.
It also makes learning about each new feature a "quest" which may not interest younger player as much, who just like to dress up, and customize stuff.
Just be aware that the "toy Box" mode is much more limited on Wii. You can still customize the look of the buildings and of your citizens, but now when you customize one you customize them all. The result is that there's a lot less to do in town, and fewer ways to just play around.
The voice acting of the characters is very good, but the music gets very repetitious and annoying.
Overall I scored it quite low, initially on price, and as others have said, despite the popularity wave of the movie, you will I'm sure see this locally much cheaper before too long. Secondly, it's in that middle ground between too easy or adults, and a little tougher on the very small. |
The Kids Love this game! 2010-08-31 |
| By Shilom (MI) |
| My 4 and 11 year old can sit and play this together for hours and actually get along! The graphics are great, its like you're right in the movie, and the characters are all spot on. My youngest just loves jumping into the movie and my oldest loves beating the levels. Unusual that they like anything based on a movie, definitly a winner in our house! |
